Reiki is a spiritual healing practice with its origins in Japan. The term Reiki is derived from the Japanese words (Rei) meaning “Universal Life” and (Ki) meaning “Energy”. Reiki is not connected to any specific religion or spiritual practice. It does not involve massage and is not based on belief or suggestion. It is a gentle and effective form of energy work utilizing spiritually guided life force energy.
Reiki represents the life energy that circulates through all living beings. Reiki Practitioners recognize that everyone can connect with their own healing energy to enhance their energy and assist others. It is believed that a person’s “ki” or energy should be robust and unobstructed. When this is the case, a person’s body and mind are in a healthy state. If the energy becomes weak or blocked, it may result in physical or emotional imbalance.
A Reiki session can help alleviate tension and stress and can support the body in creating an environment conducive to healing on all levels—physical, mental, and emotional. A session is enjoyable and relaxing and is often used for personal wellness.
History of Reiki
Reiki is believed to be associated with Mikao Usui, who is credited with rediscovering the root system now known as Reiki. His teachings and methods were passed down through several grandmasters of Reiki. Today, Reiki exists in many forms, but The Usui System of Natural Healing remains the most widely practiced. Practitioners and Master Teachers are trained through an initiation process where Masters impart their knowledge and skills to their students.
Description of a Typical Session
A session typically lasts 60 to 90 minutes. During an initial session, a Reiki Practitioner will usually engage in a discussion with the client. They will explain the session, allow the client to discuss any specific issues or problems they are facing, and ask what they hope to achieve from the session. During the session, the client will lie comfortably on a massage table on their back with their shoes off. Reiki can also be performed with the client sitting comfortably in a chair. Unlike massage therapy, clothing is not removed, and the client remains fully clothed; loose, comfortable clothing is recommended. A session can be hands-on, where a Practitioner applies a light touch, or hands-off, where they hold their hands slightly above the body. If a client prefers not to be touched, they can inform the practitioner beforehand.
The session will then continue with the Reiki Practitioner moving through specific standard Reiki hand positions, starting at the head or feet. A recipient of Reiki might experience a warming sensation, tingling, or simply deep relaxation. The session should be very pleasant, relaxing, and invigorating.
What is Reiki used to Treat?
Reiki is an excellent tool for stress reduction and relaxation. Many individuals use Reiki for wellness purposes. While Reiki is not a cure for disease or illness, it may help the body create an environment conducive to healing. Reiki is a valuable complement to traditional medicine and is practiced in many hospitals and healthcare settings.
Often, after experiencing Reiki treatments, a client may wish to learn Reiki to work with this energy themselves by taking a Reiki I course. This can be advantageous as they can then use this tool for stress reduction and relaxation whenever they wish, especially when cost might otherwise be a barrier.
